General Collections

The main collection of the Museum consists of hundreds of artifacts and thousands of documents spanning the history of the Corps. The collection has substantial holdings for Australian Army intelligence operations in World War 2 and the Vietnam Campaign. There are significant holdings for recent UN operations including Somalia and Timor. There is a collection of weapons and other artefacts of a general nature, ranging from a WW1 German soldiers pre-1916 identity disk, to a Japanese artillery piece of World War 2. There are other items covering most operations that the Corps has been involved with. This collection is stored within the Museum proper and is available for viewing and research purposes.

From time to time, items may be out on loan to meet Defence training or Australian Intelligence Corps objectives.

The Museum is seeking:

Intelligence material related to the Occupation of Japan, the Korean War and the Malayan and Borneo Campaigns.

WW1 and WW2 Field Censorship information (policy and procedures) and material (Acquisition of a Censor Stamp is a high priority).

Any material and information relating to the capture of Rommel's 621 Signals Company by the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion during a Brigade Raid at Tel el Eisa, Egypt in 1942.

Library

The Museum has a small collection of books related to the intelligence in the Australian context. Types of books include those published mainly for consumption by the author's immediate family, such as the work of LTCOL Shave, to the recent book published on the life and times of the DMI in World War 2, Brigadier Rogers. Museum books are not available for loan, but may be studied within the confines of the Museum. Elements of any book may be copied, subject to copyright.

Doctrine Collection

The Museum has a substantial collection of doctrinal publications. Whilst it is mainly related to land (Army) intelligence, there are items of interest to those researching the Imagery Intelligence discipline. Items of this collection are available for reading within the confines of the Museum.

The Museum's doctrine acquisition objectives are:

Any material related to WW1 Australian and British military intelligence processes.

Australian and British Army intelligence publications and pamphlets from 1901 to 1970.

Information on Prisoner of War handling and processing and related fields from 1900 to 1970.

Signals Intelligence in WW1 and WW2 - most particularly the Intelligence operations of the WW1 Australian Wireless Company's and the WW2 Australian Army Special Wireless Group, RAN Fleet Radio Unit Melbourne (FRUMEL), RAAF Telecommunications Units, Canadian Special Wireless Group and Central Bureau.

Training Collection

Due to the Museums strong ties to the Defence Intelligence Training Centre, there is an extensive collection of training material ranging from the earliest days of the Corps, through World War 2 and into contemporary training.

The Museum is seeking training material related to WW2 'Enemy Equipment Sections' and 'Field Security Sections'.

Navy Collection

The Museum recently established a program to collect material related to intelligence activities in the RAN. Little progress has been made, though there are a few entries in a computer archive similar to that of the Aust Intelligence Corps mentioned above. Further items are sought.

Any material related to RAN Intelligence activities would be welcome.

Air Force Collection

The Museum recently established a program to collect material related to intelligence activities in the RAAF. Little progress has been made, though there are a few entries in a computer archive similar to that of the Aust Int Corps mentioned above. The Air Force Collection includes a WW2 Air Force Intelligence Officers Handbook and material related to the Air Industries Section, also of World War 2. Further items are sought.

Any material related to RAAF Intelligence activities would be welcome.

Our Allies and Other Corps

Through the generous acquisitions and donations by a few Australian Intelligence Corps Association members, the Museum has recently managed to acquire a number of items showing the activities and relationship of our Allies in WW1 and WW2. With the development of the Museums formal collection plan it is intended to broaden the collection to include the contribution to Australia's military intelligence by other Defence organisations, service branches and Army Corps.

The Museum would appreciate contributions showing the military intelligence activities and operations of other Corps, Australian Defence Organisations and interaction/cooperation with our past and present Allies. (for example: WW1 - Canada, France, NZ, UK, US, Japan, Belgium, Russia and so on)

Recording and Preserving Veterans' Memories

It is highly desirable that the stories and other information gained from interviews with veterans be properly recorded and preserved. The MAMI and Association strongly support the program being conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs and more information can be obtained from the following website:
